私たちは皆、生まれながらにして〈驚き〉の心を持っています。赤ちゃんが周りで起こっていることを観察し始め、初めてできるようになったことに自ら驚き喜ぶ姿を、静かに見守ってみましょう。その注意深い関わりと気づきが、赤ちゃんに安心感と励ましを与えます。そのプロセスが、その子の人生の中でずっと続いていくことを願いたいものです。しかし残念ながら、多くの場合その〈驚き〉の心は、成長して教育システムに入るころには薄れてしまいます。
ここで私が皆さんと共有したいのは、私が長年招待を受け続けているある幼稚園のクリスマスのお祝いについてです。その幼稚園の名は「森の幼稚園」といいます。静かな場所にある幼稚園です。モンテッソーリ教育法を取り入れており、子どもの内面的な成長に重点を置いています。幼い子どもがどれほど早い段階で多くのことをできるようになるのか、あなたも驚くことでしょう。
幼稚園に到着すると、私はまず園長先生と会い、クリスマスの準備がどのように進んでいるのかをうかがいます。その後、園長先生とともに薄暗いホールに入り、園長先生がテーブルの上に置かれたクリスマスの馬小屋飾り、楽器、そしてたくさんのろうそくに火を灯し始めます。ろうそくの灯りは、温かく親しみのある雰囲気を作り出します。そして私たちは待ちます。
やがて子どもたちが先生に導かれ、一人ずつゆっくりと、そして静かに入場し、テーブルの前に並びます。最後尾には、障がいを持つ子どもや自閉症の子どもたちとそのお母さんたちが続きます。全部で200人の子どもがいますが、皆が静かにしているのです。薄暗いホールに灯されたろうそくの光の中に入っていくことで、子どもたちは練習の時とは違う環境に胸を高鳴らせているように見えます。
子どもたちはまずクリスマスの歌を歌い、その後、静かに床に座ります。園長先生が私を紹介し、私は短い話をします。入場時にとても静かにしていたこと、そして〈わくわくする心〉を見せてくれたことに、どれほど感動したかを伝えます。ろうそくの灯りの中では、私たちは皆、見え方も感じ方も普段とは違ってくるということを、私はいつも思い巡らせます。やがて、子どもたちがクリスマスの馬小屋に捧げる花の贈り物の時間になります。
各クラスから2人ずつ代表が選ばれています。式は終始静かに行われ、花を捧げる子どもたちの動きをすべての目が追います。最後に、ホールの両端にいる年長クラスの2組が互いに向かい合い、小さなろうそくに火を灯します。ろうそくの火が増え、空間はさらに温かく、親しみ深い雰囲気に包まれます。先生方がクリスマスの歌を歌い終えると、ろうそくの火が消されます。その後、年長クラスの子どもたちはゆっくりと前方へ歩き、馬小屋飾りや、ろうそくが灯された他のテーブルを見つめます。急ぐ様子はなく、じっくりと眺めたり思いにふけったりする子どももいます。先ほど触れた障がいのある子どもたちとそのお母さんたちは、〈驚き〉と〈感謝〉の心で満たされている様子です。
私は毎年このお祝いに参加できることに心から感謝しています。そして、これこそがクリスマスの神秘への素晴らしい準備だと思うのです。すなわち、すべてのものを創造した方の御子が、自らを空しくして人間の赤ん坊としてこの世に来られたという出来事。それは、神の無限の愛によって、私たちが永遠に神の命にあずかる相続人となるための出来事です。私たちもまた、身近にいる幼い子どもたちと共にクリスマスを祝うことで、この〈驚き〉の心を育むことができるのではないでしょうか。
Do You Still Have A Sense of Wonder？

We are all born with a sense of wonder. Quietly observing an infant as the infant begins to explore what is happening around and being amazed at being able to do things for the first time. The attention and noticing this provides security and encouragement to the infant and hopefully that process will continue in the infant’s life. Unfortunately for many that sense of wonder oftentimes decreases at the infant enters into the educational system.
However what I wish to share with you is an invitation I have received over many years to a kindergarten’s Christmas celebration. The kindergarten is called 森の幼稚園, which is in a quiet place. It uses the Montessori system of education. It places the emphasis on the child’s interior development. You may be surprised at what infants can do at such an early stage in life.
When I arrive at the kindergarten I meet with the principal and get a sense of what has been happening with the preparations for the Christmas celebration. Then I go with the principal into a darkened hall and the principal begins to light the candles on tables where a Christmas crib, a musical instrument and many candles are. The candlelight creates a warm friendly atmosphere. Then we wait.
The children lead by their teacher enter slowly one by one and in silence and line up in front of the tables. Taking up the rear are a small number of children and their mothers who have disabilities, some of whom are autistic. In all there are 200 children and all are silent!. The children show a sense of excitement at entering into a candlelit hall and what appears to them different surrounding to what they have been accustomed to when they had previously practiced.
Then the children sing a Christmas song. Then they sit quietly on the floor. The principal introduces me to them and I give them a short talk praising them for how impressed I feel that they have been so quiet on entering and showing a sense of excitement. I generally reflect on how different we all look and feel in candlelight. Finally they have prepared their gifts of flowers which will be present to the Christmas Crib.
Two representatives from each class have been picked for this task. This is done in silence and all eyes follow those presenting the flowers. Finally the senior two classes, who are on opposite ends of the hall face one another and light their small candles. The added lights increase the warmth and friendly atmosphere. The teachers sing a Christmas song. After that the candles are extinguished and the senior two classes in turn slowly head to the front to look at the Christmas Crib and the other tables with the lighted candles. There is no rush and some like to look and ponder. The disabled children and their mothers that I mentioned earlier are filled with wonder and gratitude.
I’m grateful for being able to join in their celebration and what a good preparation for the mystery that Christmas is, namely that Son of the Creator of all things emptying himself and talking the form of a human infant out of God’s infinite love so that we become heirs to being able to share in God’s life for eternity. Is it not possible that we can nourish our sense of wonder by joining with the infants in our midst in a Christmas Celebration
